Who I am
North of Linear is run by Katherine Brown, trading as North of Linear. I am the data controller for the personal information described here. You can contact me about anything in this notice at kat@northoflinear.co.uk.
ICO registration number: ZC281071
What this website collects
This website does not use cookies, analytics or tracking, and it does not store anything you type. The contact form writes an email in your own email app. Nothing is sent until you send that email yourself.
The company that hosts the website, Webhosting UK COM Ltd, may keep standard server logs (such as IP addresses) for security and to keep the site running.
Information you send me
When you email me or work with me, I’ll hold:
- your name and contact details
- what you tell me about your business and what you’d like help with, in writing or in recordings you send me
- notes, maps and written summaries from our work together
- invoicing and payment records
Please don’t send sensitive personal information (for example about your health) unless it is relevant and you’re comfortable sharing it. If you do, I’ll only use it for our work together. If you’d like me to adjust how we work, you can tell me what would help without sharing a diagnosis.
If we talk by phone, I may ask to record the call so I can listen properly rather than take notes. I only record with your permission. I write a short note from it for your client file, then delete the recording.
Why I use it, and my lawful basis
- To reply to enquiries and arrange work: legitimate interests, or steps you’ve asked me to take before entering a contract.
- To deliver the work we’ve agreed: performance of a contract.
- To keep financial records: legal obligation.
I don’t sell your information or use it for marketing without your permission.
Who I share it with
Only the services I need to run the business, such as my email provider (Microsoft Outlook), my website host, my accounting software, my accountant, Google (where the answers to my client questionnaire are stored), and the AI tool I use to organise my working notes (Claude, made by Anthropic). I use initials rather than full names in those notes. Some of these may store data outside the UK. Where they do, they use recognised safeguards.
How long I keep it
- Enquiries that don’t lead to work: up to 12 months.
- Client work notes and summaries: up to 2 years after our work ends, unless you ask me to delete them sooner.
- Financial records: at least 5 years after the 31 January tax return deadline for the year they relate to, as HMRC requires.
Your rights
You can ask to see the information I hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, to restrict or object to how I use it, or to receive a copy. Email me and I’ll respond within one month.
If you’re unhappy with how I’ve handled your information, please tell me first. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office at ico.org.uk.
